Commentary

A redevelopment at Mt Barker High School creating new learning and performance spaces and new administration areas

Scope

The project comprised of 2 separable portions as detailed below;

  • Separable Portion 1 – New Performance Building, including a performance area for the drama students with the flexibility to be used as 3 shared learning areas and as a single general learning area. The building was constructed against the existing Gymnasium.  The scope of works included:
    • Bulk earthworks to create the building platform (situated on an existing heavily slopped site);
    • Structural concrete – Building slab and DDA concrete ramp to provide access from upper road level;
    • Architectural entrance feature across DDA Ramp comprised of curved structural steel with brick infill
    • Structural Steel
    • Building and associated services;
    • Aluminium Windows and doors;
    • Linings and ceilings
    • Operable walls
    • Floor Finish
  • Separable Portion 2 – Refurbishment to the first level of Building 1- over 1350m2 of floor area. Works consisted of the construction of 9 general learning areas, 2 shared learning areas, multiple laboratories, store rooms and circulation spaces, open presentation area, meetings rooms, out door learning area and DDA ramp access. Associated works included:
    • Demolition back to the main building structure
    • Walls and ceilings;
    • Aluminium windows and doors;
    • Operable Walls;
    • Vinyl and carpet floor finishes
    • Building  and associated services;

Challenges

  • Laydown area situated in the school car park, access to this car park required to be maintained
  • Intricate scaffolding to ensure safe and adequate roof access
  • Working within an operational school with services required to be be decommissioned and new services to be installed
    • Noise restrictions
    • Safety of students and staff critical
  • Aligning program with school holidays to maximise productivity
  • Continual inclement weather – Completing the substructure and civil works in the middle of winter
    • Footings and slab were completed as two separate pours to beat the rain
