Foreshore Access Plan – Stage 2

Construction of a new 2.5km shared path from Gawler Street in Port Noarlunga to Wembley Street, Port Noarlunga South.

Scope

Construction of the new 2.5km section of new coast park that traversed a variety of natural and urban environments and incorporated various with specific features of the project included:

  • Construction of a new 3m wide concrete shared access path for the length of the project
  • Significant rock revetment works abutting the Onkaparinga River along Weatherald Terrace
  • Construction of new boardwalk and stair connection to the existing pedestrian bridge spanning the river
  • Construction of 3 new car parks including shelters, seating and general landscaping
  • Road realignment works along Weatherald Terrace to facilitate construction of the new shared use path
  • Road realignment works along Saltfleet Street to facilitate construction of the new shared use path

Challenges

  1. The rock revetment works along the Onkaparinga River presented the most technical challenge, with construction staged in 10m sections to minimise sedimentation risk and damage of partially completed works due to tidal actions in line with the relevant Marine Parks and Water Affecting Permits
  2. Construction of the section of works along Saltfleet St South, with a detailed traffic management strategy developed to manage the estimated 19,400 vpd.
  3. Minimisation of the construction footprint was a requirement, with sections of the path alignment directly abutting sensitive flora. Vegetation protection zones were established and maintained ensuring incidental access was avoided.
