Chapel Street Improvement

Creation of a new plaza within the vibrant Jetty Road - Glenelg precinct

Scope

The redevelopment involved the transformation of Chapel Street from an active roadway into a new public plaza with seating, lighting, public art, and more trees to create a new and welcoming open space for the community and visitors. On the opposite side of Jetty Road, the upgrade of Hindmarsh Lane effectively strengthened pedestrian connections within the precinct and included new public toilets, a parent room, and accessible toilets and facilities for people with profound disabilities and their carers, all within a newly created public space. Specific works included:

Demolition of existing roadways, paths and facilities
Undergrounding of HV/LV services
Stormwater improvements
New pavement and kerb construction
Construction of HD block paving throughout
Landscaping works, feature portals and new street furniture
Installation and commissioning of new ‘Smart’ lighting and catenary lighting
Construction of new public amenities building and refurbishment / remodeling of existing facilities

Challenges

Staging of works to mitigate impacts on the Jetty Road traders
With occupation of additional shared use area prohibited, all works were delivered within the confines of the project footprint, including management of materials, plant and equipment
Interface works with Jetty Road footpaths and roadways – staging strategies adopted to mitigate impacts on the general public
