Witton Bluff Boardwalk D&C

The design and construction of the boardwalk at Witton Bluff was Stage 1 of the Base Trail project. This project aimed to link two iconic Adelaide beaches. We were engaged to undertake the construction of an elevated shared use pathway/boardwalk around Witton Bluff, between the Christies Beach and Port Noarlunga foreshores. We undertook the design and construction of a new 3m wide boardwalk pathway around the base of the cliffs and above the limestone shelf.

This project comprised:

  • A new 420m elevated boardwalk with 100m earthen ramp to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists
  • New, formalised viewing areas and pedestrian and cyclist connection to the adjoining shared path and cycle network
  • Installation of seating and fencing, signage, trail lighting and furniture.

The boardwalk was comprised of fibreglass composite, which framed the limestone shelf and provided structural support for the cliff face. The boardwalk was constructed from a material similar to that of a surfboard, to prevent walkers burning their feet. It also is rust resistant, prevalent in this seaside location. A major challenge was the project’s location in proximity
to the tides. The footings design was changed to 450mm dia bored piles to present a reduced surface, making them less visually obvious. The footings were also designed to handle the changing tides in the area. We also had to program our works around the tides, which were ever changing and restricted site access.
